PD Standard 1 - The candidate has deep knowledge of current and emerging state initiatives and programs including, but not limited to, the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI); the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI); Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX); Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators and Students Statewide (ACCESS); and RTI (Response to Instruction) and their relationship to student achievement.
Through my engagement with professional communities online, I have developed a deeper understanding of key Alabama initiatives such as the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI), AMSTI, ALEX, ACCESS, and RTI. By interacting with other educators, I discovered practical ways these programs directly support student achievement, especially in early childhood settings like Head Start. For example, I use ARI strategies such as interactive read-alouds supported by digital read-aloud videos and projected storybooks using YouTube. I have also incorporated AMSTI’s hands-on, inquiry-based approaches along with simple digital tools like classroom timers and interactive visuals to guide exploration. Additionally, I use ALEX to access standards-aligned lessons and display activities on my classroom screen. These technology-supported strategies help me connect state initiatives to real classroom practices, making my instruction more engaging and effective.
PD Standard 2 - The candidate understands how content and skill development can be supported by media and technology and knows how to evaluate these resources for quality, accuracy, and effectiveness.
Through my professional learning online, I have developed a stronger understanding of how technology can support both content and skill development in young children. In my Head Start classroom, I use technology intentionally to enhance learning and strengthen family engagement. For example, I use the Teaching Strategies Family App to document student learning, share photos and videos, and communicate progress with families. I also incorporate Jolly Phonics during center time to reinforce early literacy. Additionally, I use short educational videos and songs during transitions to support attention and movement. Through professional interactions, I have learned how to evaluate these tools to ensure they align with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework and meet the developmental needs of my students. This has helped me become more intentional and effective in integrating technology into my classroom.
PD Standard 3 - The candidate dedicates time to collaborate with both colleagues and students to improve practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and solve problems.
I have actively collaborated with colleagues and other professionals by sharing ideas, asking questions, and participating in discussions focused on improving teaching practices. In Head Start, collaboration is essential, and I have used ideas from professional communities to strengthen communication with both my teaching team and families. For example, I use Canva to create newsletters, visual schedules, and family engagement materials that are clear and accessible, especially for English Language Learners. PD Standard 4 -The candidate continually improves his or her practice by learning from and with others and exploring proven and promising practices that leverage technology to improve student learning.
I continually improve my teaching practice by learning from others and exploring new strategies that enhance student learning. Through professional engagement, I have been introduced to innovative approaches such as play-based learning combined with technology-supported instruction. In my Head Start classroom, I use YouTube for movement activities, songs, and brain breaks that support engagement and smooth transitions. I also use virtual field trips and interactive videos to build background knowledge for my students, especially since many are English Language Learners. Additionally, I incorporate digital visuals, songs, and storytelling to support comprehension and language development. These tools help me create a more engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment.
PD Standard 5 -The candidate seeks out opportunities for leadership to support student empowerment and success and to improve teaching and learning.
Through my professional engagement, I have recognized the importance of leadership in supporting student success and improving teaching practices. In my Head Start program, I have taken initiative by sharing resources and modeling effective use of technology with colleagues. For example, I have helped others learn how to use Teaching Strategies for documentation and family communication. I also share materials created with Canva, such as visual supports and classroom resources, to assist colleagues in their teaching. Additionally, I demonstrate how to use digital tools for engagement, such as videos and interactive activities.
